redhat 9 mpeg help

| i just installed redhat 9 on my system with dual boot Windows 2000 pro, i
intalled the apt-get packages the after i updated my RPMs whit : apt-get
upgrade
i installed the package that needed to run mp3s on xmms and works fine...
also installed a pre-compiled kernel for ntfs support and i just mounted all
my archives partition.
now i try to listen some .mpg , .mpeg , .avi
i can't :\ i tryed a package called mplayer but i will not be able to
installed it successfully... can someone help me to install a mpeg support
for my linux redhat 9???

The mplayer package alone won't get you support for all this.
You will also need some codecs. There is a codec package (w32codec) at
the atrpms repository. If you do not have that one in your apt.conf take
a look at http://atrpms.net
If mplayer does not work you can always try xine.
