Red Hat Installation - reinstall rh9--question

my linux system is totally corrupt ---been signing on as root --system does
not get to sign on screen --get error about xserver ---( /root/.Xclients:
line 8:/root/Xclients-default: no such file or directory--using gnome ---can
get to files however with knoppix--if I reinstall rh9 ( previous install
accepted all default partions etc) will my old files be available?
