As the NTFS write capability from linux has been seen as unstable and
potentially can corrupt your NTFS partition, hence the read only option
compiled into the standard kernel. You can recompile the kernel but turn
read/write mounting on - caveat emptor. You will need the kernel sources
installed of course.

You do not need to recompile the kernel. RPMS for NTFS R/O support are
available from:
http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/rpm/downloads.html
Just be sure to read ALL of the instructions regarding the setup and
mounting procedures (including automount at startup).
FWIW, there is an NTFS read/write option that is at:
http://www.jankratochvil.net/project/captive/
The above requires the use of ntfs.sys from Windows.
As with all such things and as Mica wrote, no guarantees. I do use the
SF RPMS for FC2, which work just fine. I have used these RPMS since RH
8.0 without problem. You do need to get a new RPM when you upgrade to a
new kernel, as the RPMS are kernel specific.
I do not use the 'Captive' option above.
