Fedora Core 2: cannot add printers / lots of apps hang
|

| Hello there,
I just went from a fully working FC1 to FC2 and I tried to add a printer
using:
1. system-config-printer-gui: this app just hangs.
2.system-config-printer-tui:
Initializing alchemist edit environment ...
Initializing linux printing database ...
I can add printers, but cannot print a test
page. As soon as I make a change, it just hangs. I tried to print from
within an application, but that fails.
3. http://127.0.0.1:631 --> no go. It hangs for ages when I try to add a
printer this way.
Oh, something else: I can not launch OpenOffice Writer: it too just hangs
and I have to ctrl-alt-backspace ... Mozilla-1.6 also hangs after being
launched.
Any ideas? Help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Robert

To add a printer , at a console , type
printtool
This will start up a GUI and you will be able to configure your printer.
( I used this yesterday on FC 2 to add a samba printer )

Unable to retrieve the printer list. Error message received from manager:
Connection to CUPS server failed. Check that the CUPS server is correctly
installed and running. Error: the IPP request failed for an unknow reason.
The CUPS daemon is running and I did: /etc/rc.d/init.d/cupsd restart to be
sure. Same error over and over. I could not connect to localhost:631 and
there is no firewall blocking this port.
