I am having problems ftping to my redhat server :

The following error appears in /var/log/messages :

vsftpd : warning : can't get client address : Bad file descriptor :

any ideas what this means?

Linux is running as a guest VM under VMWare and I now think this is a
VMWare issue.

I can telnet OK from other VMs, but not from other machines on the
network.
