Ok, Im kind of a nOOb to linux but I have used it before.

Basdically, fedora 4 wont install onto my thinkpad R30 as rather than the
graphical installer i ger a white screen and it all dies. My media is fuine
btw. When I do a text install it works but when I boot up X dies. Ot doesn
originally find the correct screen and graphics card but i edited xorg.conf
for ps/2 mouse, 1024x768 flat panel and generic trident cyberblade card.
These settings work fine for FC1, Mandriva 2006 and Knoppix.

Gee, I just answered the same question for somebody else on another group.
(and I'm not an expert, I just went through the same thing with my laptop
and found the solution)

The white screen phenomenon is by now a well-known FC4 problem and
afflicts Trident Cyberblade and certain other video hardware. The
cause is that the new C compiler optimized away a certain line of
code which has to be executed for the video hardware to work. This
has been fixed with an updated c compiler and an updated xorg-x11
package.

Probably the best way to fix it for you is to install using the
text-mode procedure, then get the xorg-x11 updates from one of the
update mirror sites and install that, then get the system up running
X and install the rest of the updates, of which there are a whole lot.

Another way is to get an unofficial FC 4.1 disc set and install with
that. Getting that disc set requires using bittorrent. And I don't
know if it is still available - the one who produced it said he was
about to start on an unofficial FC 4.2 disc set with more updates.

For discussion of the original problem and its cause and fix, go to
http://bugzilla.redhat.com, click on search existing bug reports,
select Fedora Core, FC4, and xorg-x11 as the components, look for
resolved bugs using "white screen" as keywords. You'll come up with
a bunch of bug numbers which eventually get recognized as being
the same bug and merged. And then a long and occasionally interesting
discussion of various work arounds and fixes. But you can skip all
that by just doing what I said above and getting the xorg-x11 update
installed before trying to run X.

For the unofficial FC 4.1 discs, go to http://www.fedoraforum.org
and search with fc 4.1 as the search terms. Look down until you see
unofficial "FC 4.1" updated i386 isos and read that discussion.
Looks like he has made the unofficial 4.2 disc set available by now.

If you do the text mode install from FC4 discs you will probably want
to edit /etc/inittab and change the line
id:5:initdefault:
to
id:3:initdefault:
so the system comes up with terminals instead of trying to run X.
Then when you get X running you can change it back.
