| hi,
I have been trying to install Redhat 8.0 on a Dell Optiplex Gx270. The
installation is smooth without any problem. At last I click "Exit" to
reboot the system. The sytem just can not boot. It just display some
information and hang there forever.
The following is what appeared on the screen. Would you please give me
some hint since I am new to linux. Thanks.
By the way, no problem with Fedora.

| Count me in to the fold on this one as well. If you have found a solution could you please post it here.
I have been trying to install Redhat 8.0 on a Dell Precision Workstation 370n. If you have details please post them here!
My specific details are as follows:
.... boot sequence ...
PCI_IDE: unkown IDE controller on PCI bus 00 device f9, VID=8086, DID=266f
PCI_IDE: chipset revision 3
PCI_IDE: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
ide0: BM-DMA at 0xffa0-0xffa7, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:pio
ide1: BM-DMA at 0xffa8-0xffaf, BIOS settings: hdc:pio, hdd:pio
PCI_IDE: unknown IDE controller on PCI bus 00 device fa, VID=8086, DID=2652
PCI_IDE: chipset revision 3
PCI_IDE: 100% native mode on irq 5
ide2: BM-DMA at 0xfea0-0xfea7, BIOS settings: hde:DMA, hdf:pio
ide3: BM-DMA at 0xfea8-0xfeaf, BIOS settins: hdg:pio, hdh:pio
hda: GRC-8483B, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hde: WDC WD800JD-75JNA0, ATA Disk Drive
ide0 at 0x1f00-0x1f7, 0x3f6 on irq 14
After this point it is hung and no more text appears.
Thanks in advance,

| Apparently, there is no Serial ATA support in RHL 8.0 (kernel 2.4.18-14) thus, even though I had configure my machines IDE controller to be in legacy mode the HD still needs to a normal ATA drive to work properly.
Good luck | |

| Hi, the solution is quite simple!
The RedHat 8.0 simply doesn't work with DELL GX...
But, as I need to istall RedHat due to some software compatibility problems, I tryed the Fedora 3.0. And, surprise: it works!
If you need a mor stable version, try out the Red Hat Enterprise 3.0. I think that works to: you can confirm this at the hardware compatibility site in the Red Hat's web page.
Friendly,
Mesquita |
