RAID/SCSI adapter "support" for Enterprise 3.0 on AMD64

| No joy on my Tyan 2850 Opteron 144 system w/8GB RAM and LSI MegaRaid
320-1 RAID controller. It is a PCI/PCI-X controller plugged into a PCI
slot. (Just FYI, card works fine in the PCI slot for configuring RAID,
etc., and also installs/loads Windows fine.)
I am no guru, nor am I a total neophyte.. but I can't get Suse 9.0
Enterprise (64 bit), Mandrake 10.1 (64 bit) or Red Had Enterprise 3.0
(64 bit) to install using that LSI controller. They install fine with
Adaptec 29160 controller and IDE drive and even an ancient 1996 vintage
Adaptec 294UW. Red Hat recognizes the 320-1 controller but freeze
during install while "loading MegaRaid driver". The other two just
crash during install, despite getting latest correct driver disks and
installing with "dd" option and "acpi=no" as the instructions
recommend.
I'm not asking necessarily for a fix--I'm just curious what RAID
adapter will actually work with this system. For example, Adaptec
lists only it's latest PCI-X $500 adapter as "supported" with RHE 3.0.
But as I've mentioned, ancient hardware also works. I'd just as soon
use the Adaptec 160 RAID adapters for 1/2 the price, but RHE 3.0
doesn't list them as being supported.
A general question--do Linux distrubutions generally support most
pre-existing equipment? It looks like it to me in the case of the 1996
Adaptec SCSI card. Will RHE 3.0 work with any existing Adaptec RAID
adapter less than... five years old?
Thanks for the responses (in advance).

| Have you tried the new SP1 cd's for SUSE 9? It has a newer megaraid
driver...

| The LSI Megaraid Controller series should work without any problems on
RHEL3.
I for one do have several LSI MegaRaids SATA-150-6 cards running on
RHEL.
The installer should detect them out of the box.
