I added "pci=assign-busses", as the /var/log/messages suggested, and,
lo and behold, all is now well! The cardbus card is recognized and is
functioning.
Serves me right for neglecting to scrutinize the bootup logs! (which,
prior to the fix, said: "... localhost kernel: Yenta: no bus associated
with 0000:01:0c.0! (try 'pci=assign-busses') " ).
Thanks for anyone who gave this a thought.
