Hi group,

I have installed Fedora 5 on a laptop and there is a small light which
indicates wireless activity of the machine. Now, I update the driver
and sometimes it start flashing. I'm assuming it detects a wireless
network in some point but I have no idea how to use it!

I have asked several linux users as well but they had no idea. I know
there is wiconfig or ... but I want to know how I can use it or have my
browser use it instead of eth0 interface.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

James T.

You would need to state exactly what brand/model laptop you have & if you
can find out, what wireless chipset your laptop's wireless card uses to
get a more direct answer. Since you did not provide such info, the group
can only give you a generic answer.

I would recommend that you start by checking linux-on-laptops.com and
tuxmobil.org to see if someone has already wrote a setup how-to for your
laptop.

If you do not find your laptop listed, then see do a google search for
your specific wireless card and linux in the search criteria. This may
bring good results.

ndiswrapper (ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net) has worked well for many
linux wireless users. If your chipset is supported, you should be able to
use that and your windows wireless driver to get things working.

An example of how I activate my Acer Aspire 3002LCi's the
internal wireless card with ndiswrapper, can be found here:
http://www.hoflink.com/~turajb/linux_acer3k2_fc5.htm

As to your wireless flashing light issue, that is normal to see in most
cases. For example with my laptop, before I activate the wifi connection,
the light flashes on/off once every second or so, on a constant basis.
Once I run my wifi start script & it activates the connection, the light
stays solid on. It will then flash lightly/randomly as data is transferred
to/from the laptop.

I hope this info helps...
