Why I like RedHat 9.0 better than Fedora 5
|

| I understand that Fedora 5 is supposedly a better operating system than
RedHat 9.0. However, I am new to Linux, and after installing RedHat 9.0
on one of my systems, I was quite happy with it...Even though I am having
trouble getting it to print to a Windows Network Printer...
Along the way to resolve this issue, someone suggested that Fedora 5 is a
newer, better OS, and I should be using it instead.
So...I downloaded all five disks, and installed it. It started up fine,
and seems OK. I, however, prefer RedHat 9 for the following reasons:
I much prefer Pan for reading newsgroups. I far superior program
comparedt to the email program that incorporates a newsgroup reader in
Fedora 5.
Seems to be more programs in RedHat 9..For instance, compare the games
section...
I really prefer the GUI in RedHat 9. I don't like the look of the
desktop in Fedora.
And finally, I like seeing a cute little Red Hat icon on my taskbar...
Now. What am I missing? Can I install Pan in Fedora? Is the Samba
interface smoother in Fedora? I could not seem to get my Windows printer
working in Fedora either..
I know they are both good, but why should I switch to Fedora? What are
the shortcomings of 9.0??
I started with Debian, and find both RedHat and Fedora nicer for me.

Red Hat Linux 9 is basically a dead OS, Red Hat ended support years ago and
Fedora Legacy will stop on October 1, 2006;

Change the theme then for Fedora Core 5, the default is the Bluecurve theme
and nothing stops you from choosing/installing one to your liking.
Yes look in the extra section on the Fedora site for the pan rpm package;
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/p.../extras/5/i386/
If yum is configured for this repo then; yum install pan
That's because Windows is missing the Unix print service which is not
installed by default and design;

So use pan. /usr/bin/pan It may be an extra but it is available for FC4 at least.

Did you choose the install everything option? Oddly you have to choose the
option to make a customized installation and down at the end of that list is an
option to install everything. Also run yum or more easily yumex to look for
games available you do not have installed.

The is not Redhat. Gnome, KDE, NextStep or some other is what you see. I think
it defaults to KDE these days. Find the one you used on 9, make that the default
and then go through the options to make look the way you want it to look. The
GUIs have evolved since RH9.

Go to OPTIONs and look for it. Or right click on the present icon, choose
configure and click on the icon button for a set of icons you can use with it.

The reason to upgrade is everything on it is upgraded and with yum it is fully
automatic and very simple. KDE and Gnome are things you do want to update for
many reasons and that is not trivial to do by hand.

Always first consider what is nicer. A distribution is just a collection of
linux apps that have been tested or modified to be compatible and work together.
A better distribution is a better collection not better apps. The apps should
work better on newer distributions.
