It turned out (as far as I can tell) to be that the DVD drives in the
computers I tried weren't quite up to snuff...
I tried - one last time - with a WinXP box I use for making DVDs for
my sons' bands. It has a DVD drive labeled "Double Layer Burning 8.5
GB Capacity"... actually, I was going to copy the original DVD and see
if maybe a copy would work, and when it finished reading the DVD it
wanted a Double Layer blank DVD (which I didn't have)... and so it
occurred to me that the other computers' DVD drives were NOT double
layer - at least, not writing-capable, so I shut that computer down,
put a target HDD in it, booted... and, no problem with the install.
I gotta say I'm a little pissed that the Bible didn't mention this as
a necessity.
Anyway - FWIW, this is ONE SOLUTION...
