I can't argue with success but I do not see how that could be the problem
unless the others were so old that they were no more than 2x capable. And that
is not a generic problem but that some back in the beginning did not meet all
standards such as could not deal with DVD+R only DVD-R. Some took shortcuts to
keep the cost down. You can usually find all the warnings about this on an
insert with blanks you buy these days.

If the drive was in fact that old please post. If not can you tell us all you
know about the drive that didn't work? I am certain the issue is not double
layer capable but that does mean it is not a very old drive. I have installed on
a drive that was not dual layer capable.
