Only external IP Shows in Address Bar
|
|
|
| Hello,
I have a website pointing to an external IP address.
When you get to the site, the address bar shows the
external IP but now the actual address (i.e.
http://mysite.com). How can I change that? Thanks.

| How is it redirecting? In IIS? If you redirect to an IP, i suppose it will
show the URL of what you redirected to (ie, the IP). Why not redirect to the
domain name instead?

| I bought the domain name from register.com. I wanted to
host it at my office, so I assigned an external IP to the
machine that was hosting the files. Then I went to
register.com's site and paid for redirecting the
www.name.com to the external IP. Is there a better way?

| Yes, set up name servers and associate www.name.com with your IP address.
Good info here:

Point it to a name instead of an IP.

| I'm not sure how register.com does, but if they use redirecting, instead of
letting you edit the DNS server, then you will have this problem. I suggest
that you contact them, and tell them what problem you have, and they might
be able to give you a solution.
