hi,
I always get an error "HTTP 404 File not found" when I try to load an
exe-file from a virtual directory to run on the client. I can open other
files (htm) from the same directory, but no exe-files.
Thanks for any help!

Hello,

Have you installed URLScan? This prevents (by default i think) exe-files to
be downloaded, unless you allow it.

This KB Article explains how to configure URLScan:

"How to configure the URLScan Tool"

Great answer! URLScan was the problem.
Thanks!

Do you have URLScan running (from IIS Lockdown)? It is configured to reject
requests to .exe files by default.
