Hi,

Why do DNS servers redirect http://domainA.co.uk to one IP and
www.domain.co.uk to another IP ?

I setup a DNS A record recently. Is it just a case of waiting for
prorogation ?

Thanks
Scott

Hello,

It is because they point to different IPs.
If you changed one of them recently, so they point to the same IP, then
wait a while.

The DNS information may be cached in a local DNS server, or your
client, for some time.

If you need more information and/or help about DNS, i can recommend a
DNS newsgroup. This is not related to IIS, so the DNS experts can tell
you more about your issue.

DNS newsgroup:

microsoft.public.windows.server.dns
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsser...groups/dgbrowse
r/en-us/default.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windows.server.dns&lang=en&cr=U

DNS doesn't "redirect." It resolves a name to an IP. You have two
host names, you can have them point to two different IP addresses.
That's what DNS does.

That depends greatly on what the A record was. Propagation is usually
less than 48 hours, often quicker, and systems using the DNS server
for resolution should receive the changes immediately.
