IIS 5.1 Dead In The Water

| Hello,
I've recently installed IIS 5.1 on a new XP Pro system.
Things have worked OK for a few weeks but now I am
covered in grief...
Worldwide Web Publishing Service hangs on startup...IIS
Management Console for IIS not responding...
I've uninstalled IIS and reinstalled several times with
good success. Everything works again until I power down
and restart system I think.

| It seems like the problem is related to COM+ , which has been the target of
viruses in the recent past. Is this system up to date with its patches? Or
maybe you are running anti-virus/security software that is disabling IIS
from running when you reboot?

| Hello David and thanks for the response!
It is a new system originally purchased with XP Home
edition (before I learned of XP HE lack of support
concerning IIS) I purchased the XP Pro upgrade and
installed IIS a few weeks ago. As I had indicated, there
were no problems at first. Indeed, I spent the first 2
weeks or so calling up http://localhost almost nightly to
review the online documentation. This problem seems to
have gotten into full swing around last weekend when I
went to work on a web project.
I do have Norton Anti-virus/Firewall in place but they
were there even before I first installed IIS. Nonetheless
I took the suggestion of another post concerning a
similar problem and reinstalled IIS again todqay making
certain my anti-virus software was disabled. Same
story...seems to work but functioning is lost when I
reboot.
Regarding patches, although I've been downloading updates
from the microsoft website like a madman I can't say for
sure if I am right up to date. When I first got my system
up and running there was a laundry list of things to
download and install. Could I have missed one or two?
Possible.
I'm at a loss and would be happy to entertain any
suggestions...
Thanks agian,
MMM

| If IIS seems to work when you install it but then seems to stop working when
you reboot... it probably is due to something external preventing IIS from
working
Can you check the Norton configuration to see if is intentionally disabling
IIS?

| Hi again David and thanks again for the follow up.
Actually, after reading your last post I went back and
disabled both the firewall and the anti-virus...no dice.
However, I was also thinking about your comments
regarding COM+. I was researching the error codes I
posted earlier today and, of course, one of them was
regarding this subject. But all of this stuff is really
over my head and if any suggestions in the knowledge base
didn't offer explicit, step-by-step instructions...well I
was just floundering, shall we say.
Anyway, I have taken many trips to Services in the
Administrative Tools and after your last post I noticed
that COM+ Event System status was "Started", yet COM+
System Application status was "blank". I opened its
properties and set startup type on the general tab
to "Manual", clicked start service, and everything came
back online.
Did some tweaking and I now have COM+ Event System, COM+
System Application, and even World Wide Web Publishing
all set to "Manual" start. I'll go back and change them
individually between restarts to see if they will all
resume normal behavior when startup types set
to "Automatic."
Everything is now accessible. The only quirk is that when
I click on the "Online Documentation" link on the opening
page (http://localhost)the left hand frame containing the
table of contents is missing and in its place is the ever
familiar broken link box! Don't know why so I'm hoping
that I can either get to the bottom of it or at least
there are links within the text to reach all content.
I'd still like to know what the heck happened as I hadn't
touched anything regarding ANY of the services before
things got ugly. Do you know if COM+ System application
is supposed to be running by default? If so, what would
knock it out?
We'll see what happens...
Thanks again for your prompt responses and follow up!

| Yes, the COM+ System Application needs to be running for IIS to function.
Normally, it is set to automatic.
I suspect some security software you've run decided that "you're a consumer;
you don't need to be running any servers" and just flat out messed with a
lot of your settings to intentionally break functionality in the name of
security.
All these "security" software can only stereotype users and guess at what
you want to do. They figure that people running real servers wouldn't be
running this code so they are free to do whatever they want.
Personally, all I run is:
1. Internet Connection Firewall -- blocks all the ports without affecting
functionality of any server/services
2. Understand and Patch anything that will eventually be accessible from the
Internet since that's an attack point.
3. Selectively poke holes in the Internet Connection Firewall to enable
server functionality. Port 80 for HTTP serving, port 139 for UNC shares,
etc.
As for the online IIS documentation -- that is actually pointed out as a
potential security vulnerability, so many people advise removing/disabling
that URL for local access. I would suggest that you either navigate to
%SYSTEMROOT%\Help\IISHelp to read the HTML, or browse MSDN (online or via
CD/DVD) for IIS Help (the SDK is under "Web Development\Server
Technologies", the product documentation is under Technet).

| I like the sort of info that I see at:
iisfaq.com
aspfaq.com
www.asp.net (for ASP.Net, if you're so inclined)
You should find tons of info related to whatever you want to do as well as
forums/newsgroups like this to ask questions/contribute responses.
I really don't have a resource in find that gives the "ins and outs" of
IIS/ASP. I usually go harass the development team that worked on "feature
X", and I occassionally do so based on newsgroup inquiry as well. :-)

David,
Server still functional...thanks for all your help. I'll
take you final comments under advisement and delete the
appropriate materialfrom the directories and browse the
suggested sites for additional info.
I would have to say you are correct regarding my security
software changing some of the settings. As I had
indicated, I hadn't touched anything before I started
having problems. Probably one of the recent downloaded
updates.
Thanks again for all of your help. I'm sure I'll be
posting again in the future as I see way too many posts
from folks trying to do this and that with IIS and ASP
and as a new green developer I can't see myself coming
through this whole process unscathed.
Also, do you recommend any good books on either IIS or
ASP? I don't care for this whole flying be the seat of my
pants approach.
Best regards,
MMM
