Is there a way to repair/reinstall IIS 5 without uninstalling it? Somehow, IIS stopped working on my computer, I have no idea what might have caused this. When I try to open the ISM It tells me that it can not find my server and asks if I want to continue
trying to connect in the future. I click yes and ISM opens. There is no server...the ISM window is empty. Alternately, if I try to restart it through the PWS interface, I click the "start" button, I get an error message:

There was an unexpected error using the Metabase.
Error = 3

Is there a stand alone install or personal version of IIS 6 I can download for an upgrade?
It seems that the only way to reinstall IIS 5 is to uninstall it using add remove programs and then reinstalling it. I'm afraid that if I do this I'll lose all my test sites I've set up over the past few years (Virtual directories etc...). I'd really like
to make this a quick fix instead of an entire days work. Any ideas?

No.

Start by posting the full error, including associated event log
entries. Let's fixe the problem, not try to reinstall. From the
looks of it, you may have a corrupt metabse, which you could restore
from backup if you have one.

Thanks,
I wasn't aware, until today, that I had to back up the Metabase. Am I correct in thinking that it backs itself up occasionally? What if there is no Metabase backup?

I really appreciate any help I can get. I'm a novice user of IIS and I use IIS as a web development test server, for multimedia/web design, so my iis admin skills are next to null. I'm off site right now but I'll post the event log entry this evening.

Nothing automatic, though normal backups that include the System32
folder should get it. If no backup, you can delete the metabase.bin
(or rename it) and reinstall IIS, but you lose all the settings.

Ok, this is the third time I've posted this response since yesterday. Hopefully it will stick this time!
