About 4 days ago, the IIS services on one of my systems began stopping for
no apparent reason.

As with the post from Rui Couto, there is noting in the event logs and
nothing apparent from the web server logs. In my case, however, the
services themselves actually stop.

I have shifted all but the most visited site to a backup system, with the
result that the crashes are now 30-120 minutes apart instead of 2-3 minutes.

IIS 4
NT 4.0 SP6a
All patches current as best I can tell.

Anybody, any ideas?

There was a regression in one of the security updates that causes IIS to
crash (bug in W3SVC.dll). You will need to contact MS-Support to get the
fix.

This doesn't seem to be the correct resolution. I am willing to give the
patch a try, but I am not getting any sort of an error, much less the
specific Dr. Watson renty mentioned in the bulitens on this one.

Litterally, the WWW (and FTP, and IIS Admin) services just stop, as if a
stop command has been issued. They will re-start just fine on command.

The only real pattern is that, following a re-boot, the interval between
stops shortens progressively from several hours until it "stabilizes"
between 2 and 30 minutes.
