We have a new 2003 server just basically running a third party email program
it's called workgroup mail. We are a relatively small comapny but have people
across the US and need webmail access. here is the problem at least twice a
day i need to restart the IIS services so the webmail page can be viewed. The
services are not stopping i just stop and restart and the webpage opens
great. I get the Unaturized access message is denied due to invalid
credentials. But everything i have read on here talks about loggin in. it
doesn't even let us get to that point it just displays that page. Any insight
would be greatly appreciated

It sounds like the IUSR password set in the IIS MMC may not match the
password set for the account in user manager.

Hi there,

Does this 3rd party app require you to logon using your Windows credentials
(using HTTP based authentication), or does it have it's own authentication
mechanism (eg using a form you type your username/password into)?

Is there anything in the Windows Event Logs that might indicate what's going
wrong? Can you post the Event ID, Source and Description?

Cheers
Ken

Getting 401.1 indicates that the username/password provided to IIS was
incorrect -- hence you will never get to do anything on IIS since you are
not authenticated.

IIS6 should never need to restart -- just recycling the Application Pool
from the IIS Manager UI of the hanging application should be sufficient. If
you need to restart, it is likely the hang is happening ELSEWHERE on the
system.

You are describing two sorts of problems -- one is a "hang" and the other is
authentication -- that are not usually related -- especially since you are
only getting 401.1 SOMETIMES and not all the time. I would look at the hang
first and diagnose that (because a hang may cause bad state that later
translate into 401.1 -- so if you solve the hang the 401.1 never happens).
Try using IIS State when the server appears hanging and post the log here.

FYI: You may want to consider running Windows Server 2003 Small Business
Edition instead of piece-meal installation of Windows Server 2003. It is
designed for your situation:
-- for a price lower than Windows Server 2003, it gives you a web server,
Sharepoint for group collaboration/website building, Exchange, OWA (web
email access), secure and remote access to any company desktop (no need for
VPN), remote server monitoring/adminstration, etc
-- basically, designed to be the one server that does it all when an
organization doesn't really have a dedicated IT staff and very easy to set
up (I know nothing about Exchange/OWA, but after the automated install that
asked me some networking questions, I had Outlook running and working,
Outlook over HTTP (rich access to email using HTTP) working, as well as OWA
(web-based access to email using HTTP) working -- I was amazed.
