I am doing some web development and would like to set up a local website to
do some testing. Although I have installed iis 5.1 on my Windows XP pro sp2
machine, I cannot view .asp pages. Over the past 3 weeks, I have found
literally hundreds of others on various iis help websites with the same
problem. I have read a number of help articles, and tried a number of
solutions, but with no success. Here are my symptoms.

1. ASP pages display the source code, but .html files with simple text work
fine

2. When I go to browse the default website I get the following error;

Server Application Error
The server has encountered an error while loading an application during the
processing of your request. Please refer to the event log for more detail
information. Please contact the server administrator for assistance.

3. When I check the event viewer, I see the following;

The server failed to load application '/LM/W3SVC/1/ROOT'. The error was
'Class not registered
'.

Among the solutions I have tried are

1. turning off any antivirus software
2. turning off the firewall
3. uninstalling and reinstalling IIS 5.1
4. uninstalling and reinstalling MSTC
5. updating registry settings
6. worked with our network guy to see of there is something in our
networking that is preventing the web stuff from working

I would really appreciate any help with this.

thanks. It looks like I'm missing a lot of files.

I ran IISRESET() and got the following;
RPC Server is not available

I ran synciwam.vbs and got this error 8004E00F:

I don't have either OLEAUT32.dll or ASP.dll on my computer

I finally feel like I'm moving in the right direction. Could the IIS 5.1 on
my operating system disk be bad? Any advice on how to proceed?

Thanks again.

At this point I guess you could try uninstalling and reinstalling IIS.
After uninstalling, make sure you delete everything in the
windows\system32\inetsrv folder.

I searched Microsoft.com for a IIS 5.1 download, but was unable to find it.
So I had to use my Windows XP Pro disk. I did a reinstall but the results
remain the same. I'm out of time on troubleshooting this problem.
Fortunately, I have a laptop running W2K Server and a working IIS, that I can
use for developing. With all of the others out there experiencing the same
problem, I was hoping Microsoft would have a solution. Bummer.

I had some problems with IIS5.1 and XP Pro SP2 too. It seems that it
doesn't always install correctly in some situations.

Your problems appear to be that certain DLL's are not registered. I had a
similar problem. I got around them by doing the following:
1. regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\atl.dll

2. regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\inetsrv\appconf.dll

3. c:\windows\system32\inetsrv\iirstas /RegServer

Thanks for your help. The first two steps executed okay. The last did not.
I'm still having the same problem.
