Author I want to run my own e-mail server - Help please

I am completely new to all this IIS stuff, but I am very much enjoyed
learning how it works. I would also like to be able to set up my own mail
server. I would like to know what you guys/gals recommend. It must be
freeware or cheap shareware.

I have seen a few e-mail server packages available on the net which don't
appear to do what I want. The packages I have seen all appear to rely on an
ISP mail server. I would like to run the mail server at my end. I have now
learned how to set up MX records, but at this time have yet find software to
suit me.

Please, if you have any pointers for me, I would be very grateful to you.

Thank you all,

Don
