We have an FTP link on our web page eg ftp://ftp.company.com/ Once a person clicks the link, IE displays a " page cannot be displayed " page. However if you click the refresh button or F5 , it then asks you for your Lon On As information.
The login information should come up as soon as that link to the FTP site is clicked ? Why do you have to refresh ?

The web server is running Windows 2000 , SP4 , each client is running IE 5.5 or higher .... We have tried recreating the FTP site, when loggin in via an FTP client it works fine and

If I type the link in manually in IE ftp://ftp.company.com/ it then prompts for the user login information

Annonymous access is disabled ...

It sounds like that first page "page cannot be found" is a cached response
in IE and then when you hit refesh it actually gose out and makes the
connection. Maybe you have to work on IE, dump the history, cached pages and
offline pages.

Thanks for your response ... However after trying this it still does not work and has to be refreshed.

Someone must have had this problems before as its not very professional in having an FTP dealer link on your web page that needs to be refreshed ...

If you create a simple test page just consisting of the ftp url link, do you
have the same problem ?
have you try to browse with netscape or mozilla ?

check the log see if ftp actually serving the request ?

I have tried in CuteFTP and there is not a problem .
All versions of IE have the same problem.
I have created a web page with just the ftp link in, however there still is the same problem that I have to refresh the page ?
I have created a new ftp site in IIS but it still comes up with page cannot be displayed , until I hit the refresh button ?
I have checked the logs and there really doesnt seem to be a prblem on the ftp side ?

Do you have IE set for FTP PASV, or ACTIVE. Also in the link have you tried
to href the IP address instead of the URL.

Do you have any firewall / NAT in between the client and server ?

I tested with IE 6 on IIS 6 ftp, no such issue, have you try test it locally
at the server ?

I have tried the IP address in the hyperlink with out any luck....

I have tried the active passive thing that Gino suggested .... without any luck

From an internal machine on our network I still have the same problem even if I change the IP address to be local eg 192.168.0.205 ...

This machine is live on the internet connected straight to our ADSL router ....

So locally on the server it works fine, however any other machine it needs to be refreshed ....

1) On the same network client machine, browse to the test page. click on the
link.
then post the ftp log file for that request.

2) Post the section of log that you browse locally without error.

3) Have you try other browser.


This is more or less client side issue, not related to ftp server.
you might want to try IE newsgroups.

Log is normal, IE first try login with anonymous, then get error and prompt
you for login. there's no sign of your error here. hence purely client
issue.

have you try other browser ?
do the machine on the same LAN has to go through your firewall or NAT ?
I don't have any IE 5.X client in my LAN.. all IE 6 from w2k, xp, w2k03 work
fine.

I have tried 5.5 & 6 , this has the same problem , that is all my clients and company will be using... I will try and install netscape tomorrow and see how I go .... i believe that its a client issue as well, but I can't get any help from anyone on the
IE side .... Thanks for your help , as this has been soo frustrating...

Good, try netscape first..
also let us know the answer for this -

I have loaded netscape 7 and it comes up and says ... Alert 530 User anonymous cannot log in ? It does not let me try to login ???

and i receive this in the log...

The FTP server has NAT enabled (win2k) and is live on the internet as well as on the local LAN, internal IP and external IP , not very secure i know this iwll be fixed !!

That's normal, it will ask you to login as other user. Now, if you enable
anonymous for testing, does it connect and display the ftp content right
away ? I got netscape 6.2, again no problem.

Mm.. what I want to test is see if client machine at the same LAN having the
same problem. these client doesn't go through the NAT, create test page html
with hyperlink to your ftp (local ip) address, then test. You should NOT
have the same problem with this setup.
E.g.
Server IP - internal IP 192.168.10.2
Client IP - internal IP 192.168.10.20
