Author FTP works from a command Window, but not from GUI

Hi,

The only way I can log onto my Windows Server 2003 (Workgroup) FTP is from a
command prompt. If I try to use IE or a third party FTP tool, I get errors
stating that the server has been reset. Has anyone else seen this?

Thanks!

Have you try IE locally in the machine ?
this should relate to the famous passive mode issue.

It doesn't work locally either. I get the following error:

An error occurred opening that folder on the FTP server. Make sure you have
permission to access that folder.

Details:
200 Type set to A
227 Entering Passive Mode (192,168,1,102,4,129).
426 Connection Closed; transfer aborted.

I am logged onto the server as the local Administrator and I can access the
directory structure via Windows Explorer and I am logging onto FTP with the
same account. Since FTP works from the command promt, I know it is not a
permissions issue.

Obviously it has *something* to do with PASV Mode. I turned off passive mode
in Internet Explorer (and CuteFTP) and it works. So, I guess it had nothing
to do with Port Forwarding on my router since it did not work locally on the
server. Also, I ran the ADSUtil.vbs script and changed the port numbers to
5500-5700 and forwarded those ports. It still didn't work in PASV mode.

As I knew, port number over 5000 need to add the key value into the registry. Also, FTP client transfer mode table is provided to you.

Unable to Connect from TCP Ports Above 5000 article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/196271/EN-US/
FTP Clients Provided by Microsoft
The following table lists the FTP clients provided by Microsoft, and the connection mode that each client supports:

FTP Client Transfer Mode
Command-line Active (non-passive)
Internet Explorer 5.1 and earlier Passive
Internet Explorer 5.5 and later Both
FrontPage ver.1.1 to Windows XP Active
