FTP with wireless and wired
|
|
|
| Hello,
I have a network at home which uses a server 2003 machine and no router.
The server has 2 nics, one directly to the internet and the other out to the
other machines via an 8 port switch.
One is a notebook which also is used at my work via a wireless card
connected to a wireless router.
The problem I am encountering is this.
The wireless can access the FTP site on the home server in Passive mode and
retrieve all files and upload too.I can also use passive via IE and all is
fine.I mainly use Coffecup as a general client. This can also connect in
passive mode.
However, none of the machines inside the home can access the FTP in passive
Including the notebook/laptop.
Any Ideas please?
Thanks much
Joe

| Are you saying:
wireless notebook via public network (internet) can connect to your IIS ftp
server
but
machines via internal network (8 port switch) can't connect to your IIS ftp
server
skip the passive mode first, can any of the internal client
uses ftp.exe to connect at command prompt ?
is the ftp bind to both internal and public IP ?

| I can connect to the FTP sites in both places (via the internet) but I cannot
connect Passive at home. I have to connect in active mode at mome (8 port
switch).
I access them via the web not the command prompt. and I will try ftp.exe
Thanks Bernard

| Yes, firewall in between. 21 avd 20 are open.
I connect via the web my server has no internal IP. For example:
Home laptop) open IE and type ftp://mydomain.com/folder
Work laptop) open IE and type ftp://mydomain.com/folder

| And how do you know passive mode is not working ?
IE is not a decent ftp client, I would suggest you get a real ftp client
app.

| well when I try passive in my real client no folders are available and when I
remove the passive mode in my ftp client they show up and I can then download
my files.
IF I am at work It will not make a difference passive or non passive.
But this is only at home. I know this sounds wierd that is why I posted. It
baffled me as to why location mattered?
thanks Bernard it just maybe something I have to deal with

| I use Coffecup FTP client and in this client there is a checkbox to remove or
enable passive mode. So when I am at work it doesn't matter I can connect and
see all the folders in either mode. But at home I cannot unless passive is
unchecked in the FTP client. So this was my analisys
If you would like a free version to have and use you can download it here
ftp://slovaun.com/programs (user: submit password: yourfile) look for
the program that says" CoffeeFree FTPInstaller.exe" this is Coffee cup free
edition and there are others if you like you may have them too. It is a very
nice little FTP client

I did not change anything in IE. Do you want me to try this?

| Err. now - when passive mode is not working, you will get 426 or related
errors at client side. So typical ftp client software will have a log when
trying to access to the server. if there's problem you will see it. if not
then it's fine.
if you can connect without problem, then you should be able to see all
folders. Passive mode is type of connection in FTP protocol, so it's either
working or not working, I still have yet to think of why active mode can see
folders, but not passive mode when you connecting from internal.
so i'm not sure where to proceed beside looking at both client and ftp log
file.

| Were you able to get into the FTP site?
I am not sure either about inside my network.I thought it was my ISP but I
went to another location on the same ISP network and all is fine, no matter
what mode I use? flippin wierd!
I am familiar with the 426 error.
So I will look again.
It is not that big a deal as long as I can get to the site.
Thanks Bernard
