Author Password protection

Three years ago someone gave me the use of a 10 meg website he got for free
when signing up for Earthlink. He has since moved away and I don't know
where he is, but the site is still okay and I can upload to it with WS_FTP
LE.

What I want to do now is create a protected folder using .htaccess and
..htpasswd. But I don't know the exact pathname to use to get to the folder
with the passwd. Is it possible to put both ht files in the same folder and
put in the simple pathname:

AuthUserFile ./.htpasswd

So that the first dot indicates to look in the same directory folder?
I've tried this and it doesn't seem to work. the "Enter Password" box comes
up three times and then I am locked out. Am I doing something wrong?

Does anyone know a workaround? All I want to do is passwd protect one folder
so I can share it privately with one other person.

IE6
