| To add one more thing... as far as I can tell, the people that are
complaining of this problem are using either IE or the CLI ftp client from
MS.
Try a real client.. Like cuteFTP or WS_Ftp and you probably wont have those
problems.
Once I had a 16GB DB2 Dump file that I had to FTP form one windows box to
another... i used CuteFTP and it was fine.

| Nutcracker,
I just tried with WS_FTP and it could not handle the 3g filer.
receiving Retrouvailles-1982.avi as Retrouvailles-1982.avi (1 of 1)
TYPE I
200 Type set to I.
PORT 192,168,2,10,7,164
200 PORT command successful.
RETR Retrouvailles-1982.avi
150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for Retrouvailles-1982.avi(3381717468 bytes).
Received 0 bytes in 0.1 secs, (0.00 bps), transfer succeeded

| AFAIK. IIS Ftp server file size limit per file is 2GB.
you might want to try ftp.exe to test yourself.
maybe it's your ftp client app doing the magic, but not the server.

| I did not use the MS CLI FTP client (I tried to get another TLA in there,
but couldnt come up with one).
I used CuteFTP as my client. That is why I am saying that it must be
something other that the MS FTP Server. All the 2GB limitations i have been
reading about has to do with using the CLI client, or IE.
There may be some other possible cause. This is just my own (albiet,
extensive) experience.

| You are correct.
the 2GB per file size limit is only hard coded in client OS. - W2k Pro and
XP Pro
for server OS - no limit.

| Oh, i may have neglected to mention before that I was moving files from one
server (where the tape backup was) to the database server that needed the
data from the tapes. So... it was a server-to-server operation.
Glad it looks like we have finally come to the bottom of this mystery.

Last I tried, IIS got upset with the REST command when given a value over
2GB, and wouldn't give a sensible response to SIZE either. Has that been
fixed?

| TimLevy 2004-03-09, 3:51 pm |
| There was an earlier thread on this subject.
I have recently happily FTP'd an approximately 7GB
compressed disk image into IIS on Windows 2000
Server (with SP4 applied).
I have repeatedly and reproducibly failed to be able
to FTP the same file back out of IIS onto a new disk.
The FTP out from IIS hangs somewhere between
3,388,899,328 and 3,388,932,096 bytes with either
a BSD UNIX FTP client or a Linux FTP client.
The symptoms are that the FTP transfer hangs.
Once the FTP transfer has hung, IIS will not respond
to any further attempted logins. Nor will the IIS
FTP service respond to an attempt to restart it
from services.msc . The *only* way I have been
able to recover the IIS service is to reboot the server.
