I beleive that you can not - remember the Virtual directory is a
configuration item within IIS. Esentially it has nothing to do with the
physical Folder, but it does link to it.

Does it still work at all even with the old name? I would assume it would be
pointing to the old folder name as well.

Virtual directories are usually only used when the content folder name is
static.
