Hello,

I have just installed FTP on IIS 6.0 (Windows 2003) and attempted to
create a new FTP Site. I point the new FTP Site to an existing Web
Site's physical root directory, apply the required IP address/port (21)
and choose not to use FTP User Isolation. When attempting to start the
new FTP Site, however, the following message is displayed:

Unexpected error 0x800cc801 occurred

There are no further error messages and nothing is logged in the
server's Event Log.

I have tried removing and re-adding the FTP Site and apart from the
error above, occasionally I get a message saying that the IP address
and TCP port configuration is conflicting with an existing Site. I try
changing the combination and this message goes away, but the
'unexpected' one above re-arises. I have tried restarting IIS to
attempt to clear out the possible conflict after removing a Site but
this makes no difference. A server reboot has also had little effect.

It looks like the 0x800cc801 error is something to do with the metabase
configuration, but I don't know how to investigate this further.

Does anyone have any ideas on this one?

Thanks,

Marc

I have not seen such error on IIS6 before.
How many ftp sites you got? have you try reinstall the ftp component from
add/remove windows components?

Hi Bernard,

Thanks for the reply.

This is the only FTP Site on the server. I have tried to uninstall and
re-install the component and then starting the Default FTP Site, but I
get the same error with this one, as well as any new FTP Sites added
thereafter.

Some strange things happen on this server every-so-often, such as the
anonymous user account locking itself out this morning. The IIS 6.0
currently running was an upgrade from IIS 5.0 when the server was
upgraded last year. Do you think a problem with the upgrade could cause
these issues?

Thanks,

Marc

Yikes! upgrade box. Can't say it related to your w2k3 upgrade for sure. but
this is the first time I see such error on IIS 6

No idea how to troubleshoot this, but you can try
enumerate the ftp metabase
adsutil.vbs enum msftpsvc and msftpsvc/1

but then - reinstall should take care of this
Arggghh.. call Microsoft PSS ?
