How do I stop getting pop-up messages? Or adware? Or spyware?

There are two basic types of popups that are common these days.

Some pop up when you are browsing to a website and there are ways to try to
deal with that. There are some settings in IE that you can check or
uncheck that could potentially stop these, for instance, but limitations
that prevent these popups may prevent other functionality that you want.
Best to go to the IE newsgroups for discussion of that. Also consider
using a search engine to see other options.

A second type of pop up has become popular since Windows XP started to
become popular with the public. This second type of popup works on NT,
Windows 2000, XP, and Win2003 boxes potentially, but not on Windows
95/98/ME. It uses the native Messaging service to deliver what amounts to
"net send" messages. This can be dealt with in a few ways. One way is to
go from control panel to services console, stop the messaging service, and
set the messaging service to disabled.
