mIRC virus or worm
|

| My computer constantly locks up whereas nothing can be
done on it for approximately 30 seconds every two or
three minutes. In my prgrams list there is this program
named mIRC, which is new and is something I did not
install. I tried to uninstall it but I only get a
message that it cannot be uninstalled while running. I
have been told that this is a virus but not how to get
rid of it.
Does anyone know how to get rid of this program, or if my
computer problem may be caused by something else? I
would really appreciate any help out there.

| Hello Thomas,
From what I found on Google, mIRC is an internet relay chat program.
One recommendation was to stop that program to startup when u reboot the
machine by following the steps below:
1) Go into system configuration (Start - Run - type: msconfig)
2) Go to the startup tab, and look for any reference to mirc and disable it
3) Then restart your system and you should be able to get rid of it.
Another suggestion was to look in Add/Remove programs and remove the
program there if it exists.
Check out this link from Trend Micro to confirm if it is some kind of an
attack or not:

Hope this helps!

| Actually, the best way to detect and remove a virus is to run anti-virus
software with the latest updates installed. It doesn't detect everything
out there, but is still the place to start [especially since finding the
exact name and version of the virus is key to knowing what it does and
doesn't do]. www.grisoft.com is free antivirus.
http://housecall.antivirus.com and other sites like www.mcafee.com and
www.sarc.com have free trial antivirus scanning web pages, though those
offer zero protection against reinfection and some just detect viruses, not
remove them.
