Author MCMS Stops working after a few days

Hi all,

A few days ago our company gave the development team the go-ahead to start
implementing Microsoft Content Management Server. Before you dismiss this
posting, let me first explain that, after a lengthy discussion around MCMS, I
was told by "Stefan [MSFT]" to post a message here, since he said that my
problem was IIS related and not MCMS related.

We installed 8 machines with Windows 2000 Prof, applied SP4 and then
installed all the Windows Updates available. We also installed IE6 SP1, the
Webcontrols that come with MCMS 2002 and Visual Studio .NET 2003. After that
we installed MCMS 2002 SP1a and then added the MCMS add-ins for VS.NET 2003
as well as the Site Manager and Site Stager. We configured a separate SQL
server for MCMS and went through the motions of creating the MCMS Database
etc. Initially all 8 machines worked fine.

Five days ago, after a reboot, one machine gave the following error when
trying to run Site Manager:
Could not connect to the Microsoft Content Management Server localhost:80.
Either the web service is not running, or there are network problems that are
keeping you from connecting to the server, or the server is not accessible
through MCMS Site Manager.

When trying to run the Server Configuration Application, the web page
displayed refered the user to consult the event log for a description of the
error. The event log contained the following error:
The server failed to load application '/LM/W3SVC/1/ROOT'. The error was
'General access denied error'.
For additional information specific to this message please visit the
Microsoft Online Support site located at:
http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp.

I then searched the net for references to this error and came across a page
that told me that by giving the users IWAM_machine and IUSR_machine both "Log
on as batch job" rights, that would fix the problem. I checked, but the said
right was already given to both accounts.

Three days ago, another machine suddenly came up with the same error and
then this morning a third decided to join the other two.

This means that three people are not able to work.

"Stefan [MSFT]" suggested:
"please post to an IIS related newsgroup.
This is not a MCMS related problem.
The problem is that the application of the IIS default web site cannot be
started.
Might be a problem with IWAM account."

With three computers down, I am desperate for any suggestions to get the
team up and running again.

Regards,
Philip
