Author security - been denied access to this machine

I have recently run into a number of problems access the IIS on my machine -
there also appears to be other problems that I am guessing are all related
somehow.

When I open IIS i get a "you have been denied access to this machine" IIS
is installed locally and the operating system is WinXP Srv Pack 2. And yes I
am an administrator.

Doesn't matter who I log in as - I always get the same message.

I have tried changing the security permissions on all files on the system
and have also tried to take ownership of all files on the system - when
taking ownership I get a warning that I do not have permissions to read the
directory \device\harddiskvolume1\inetPub. It then asks me if I want to
replace the permissions granting me full control - I always say yes. This
does not fix the problem - If I go back and try to take ownership of the
entire hard drive again I get the same message.

Something has gone screwy with the permissions on the system and I have no
idea how to fix it. - There are other possibly related issues detailed below.

1. Can't view the properties of a network adapted - permissioned denied
2. Can't view some of the settings on the Advanced tab of the windows
firewall configuration box - get message indicating the connection settings
are corrupt - restoring defaults does not fix this problem

I have also noticed that I can access to the IIS configuration if I connect
to IIS as the Guest account - but connecting as the admin account does not
work.

I know I could re-install - but I use this system for development of three
different systems and it can take me weeks to get everything working again -
if there is anyone that can help me out and fix this problem it would be very
much appreciated.

Look forward to a response.

I have just carried a system restore to a period a few weeks ago - problem
has now gone away.

The system restore built into winXP worked very well - potentially saved me
a re-install.
