Author client certificates not working

I have set up my web server to require client certificates. However, they do
not show up in the dialog box. I have performed the following steps:

I have followed the microsoft recommendation on importing client certs into
the trusted root store.

I have the client cert (s) in the personal store on the client.

I have 3 different client certs that I have tried separately, and together
without success (one-to-one map to a user account on the server)

using https, it pops up the server cert dialog box ok, but always displays
"The page requires a client certificate" after responding.

I have 2 web sites on this server. One site pops up the client dialog box
(although it's empty) and the other does not. Both give me the same result:
"The page requires a client certificate"

any help would be appreciated.

Joe
