This really has nothing to do with Active Directory, I have copied a couple
of the IIS NewsGroup in on this question.

What errors are you exactly getting? I have done what you have stated many
times in the past without error. Does the account that is running your web
service have access to the remote folder? If you aren't running the web
service with a domain account then the account (Which would be a local
account) wouldn't have any security permissions and would be denied access
to the folder. Open up services on your web server and double click on the
www service and click on the logon tab and see what account the service is
running as.
