PEAP MS CHAP V2 Without Credentials
|
|

| Hi!!
I have a RADIUS Server setup with PEAP - MS CHAP V2. On XP I have
configured the same.
Sometimes, XP box asks me to provide User Name and Password. It
connects me to the AP even without providing any credentials.
Why am I seeing intermittent requests for providing username and
password?
Regards,
Ashwin Philar

| Do you see any authentication errors in the RADIUS server event log? I
assume you are using IAS.

| Thanks for your prompt response.
I am using an IAS server for RADIUS. This first time I bring up my
wireless XP client configured for PEAP and MS CHAP V2, it asks me to
authenticate, it authenticates me and then when I restart and log in,
it does not ask me for credentials.
I believe that it is caching my information, can I disable this
caching?
If I am wrong, please let me know what's happening......
Thanks again,
Ashwin Philar
PS Was a bit confused when I saw my last name changed

| Currently 802.1x caches the user credentials on successful authentication.
Unfortunately, this is an option that cannot be turned off currently.
The reason you get prompted for credentials sometimes is probably for one of
the two reasons:
1. authentication fails for some reason - we can determine that only after
looking at your logs
2. your client is trying to authenticate you to another server/AP than what
you have cached your credentials for.
If you want me to determine this further, you can send me the rastls.log,
raschap.log and eapol.log from %windir%\tracing.
To enable logging, please type the following from a command line:
NETSH RAS SET TRACING RASTLS ENABLE
NETSH RAS SET TRACING RASCHAP ENABLE
NETSH RAS SET TRACING EAPOL ENABLE
Thanks,
Mudit

| Windows XP caches the user information most of the time for PEAP. To
delete the cache copy open regedit and go to
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\EAPOL\UserEapInf
o\ and delete the whole
alphanumeric key below the UserEapInfo Key
