smtp error 554 5.6.1
|

| I am using IIS 5.0 smtp relay to an Exchange 5.5 server.
Certain valid mail is failing with the Diagnostic-Code:
smtp;554 5.6.1 Body type not supported by the Remote Host.
Is this the Exchange box giving the error or the IIS
server?
It appears to only show up with email that have embedded
html or something similar in them.
Does anyone know a fix for this error?
Thanks!

| Hello Darius,
This error is coming from Exchange, not from IIS. Here is some information
I found from an internal resource (be sure to backup your metabase before
modifying any keys):
IIS can accept 8bitmimie mail as well as Exchange. However, Exchange only
support 8bitmime from other Exchange hosts. It will not accept 8bitmime
from foreign
systems. (This does not violate any RFC).
1. Exchange connected directly to the Internet:
A. Exchange 5.5 Nothing we can do. We do not advertise 8bitmime so the
foreign system needs to send in 7bit
B. Exchange 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;257569
2. Exchange receives mail from a third party product such as AV software,
Firewall software (Cisco Pix), content software (Mail Essentials): solution
is the same as #1 above unless you know how to disable this verb
advertisment in that other product
3. Exchange sever receiving inbound mail from an IIS server:
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;262168
OR
Using metaedit 2.2
(http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;232068) you will
need to do the following:
A. Confirm through the Internet Service Manager which SMTP virtual server
that you are using for relay
B. open metaedit on the server with IIS and navigate to the following key
[LM/SmtpSvc]
C. Search for the following value: {SmtpInboundCommandSupportOptions}
**Please note that this can exist at several levels. You will want to
modify it at the child most object. An example might be that you will have
this value for both the [LM/SmtpSvc] key and also the [LM/SmtpSvc/1] key.
This is because it is inherited from the higher level key.
D. The {SmtpInboundCommandSupportOptions} key (the ID should be 36998)
will have data of xxxxxxx. From this value you will subtract 4194304 and
type the remainder into the Data filed.
EXAMPLE: 7697601 - 4194304 = 3503297
E. Exit Metaedit and restart the virtual server.
F. Run telnet and confirm that the verb for 8bitmime does not advertise. If
it does go back to step A and modify any other
{SmtpInboundCommandSupportOptions} keys.
Hope this helps!
Thanks,
Yogita Manghnani

| Yogita-
Thanks for the prompt reply! I'll go ahead and make the=20
change now. So, when the IIS server does not advertise=20
8bitmime support, the foreign email server will send in=20
7bit?
thanks
