Problems sending to AOL addresses

| A couple of my users have reported to me that recipients
with aol.com addresses arren't receiving messages from
them here. When I checked message tracking for a couple
of these messages, the tracking stops at "started outbound
transfer of message". No other message to other domains
show this behavior; they show the normal "message
transferred to <SMTP server> through SMTP".
The punch line is that no messages are sitting in the
queue, not even for messages sent to AOL addresses as
recently as 2 hours ago. This behavior is reported for
AOL recipients as far back as 12-19-03.
We have a fairly stright forward set up:
Windows 2000 SP4, fully patched
Exchange 2000 SP3
We are set up for a smart host through our ISP's relay
server, but I also have "attempt direct delivery before
sending to smart host." We've had the smart host for
about 4 months now (there was inexplicable problem to
connect to specific domains before, that using the smart
host solved [connections being refused -- I couldn't
telnet into their server from inside our domain, but no
problem doing so from outside our domain]). AOL messages
have been going through fine AFAIK since then.
Not sure what else you need to know, but your help is
appreciated. Thanks.

| It maybe the new actions that AOL took a few months ago to curb spam.
If your IP address is not considered a "commerical" class IP then email will
be refuse.
All of Time-Warner ISPs started this a while back.
They claim most spam coming from their network are coming from residential
users.

Sending through a smart host may trigger spam filters on the other
end, as may not having a proper MX record for your domain.

| Thanks for the replies. The only thing I could say about
our MX record is that we don't have a reverse lookup, but
that never seemed to be a problem before. I'll correct
that just the same, unless there is some reason not to.
Also, I removed the smart host config and restrted the
SMTP service, but nothing seems to have changed AOL-wise.
Messages still die at the same place in transfer and the
queue shows empty.
Does anyone have an address at AOL for inquires about this
sort of thing? I'm guessing no such beast exists, but no
harm in asking.
Thanks again for the help.

| Here's the answer:
"AOL does require that all connecting Mail Transfer Agents
have established reverse DNS, regardless of whether it
matches the domain."
http://postmaster.info.aol.com/info/rdns.html
I've added reverse lookup to our DNS record, so hopefully
that will do it. Thanks for everyone's help.
