| Check to make sure external domains can be resolved. If your using DNS this
can be tested using Nslookup from the command line. There's an example in
the following article: 150114 XFOR: IMC Doesn't Appear to Use All Mail
Exchangers http://support.microsoft.com/?id=150114. Pick a external domain
that you normally send email to.
If nslookup fails, then you have a DNS issue, if it works then the next step
is to try and send a message to an external host using Telnet. Use the IP
address you got back from the nslookup and telnet to that IP address and try
and send a message. An example on how to that is documented in the following

If the Telnet fails, then it maybe a network issue when trying to establish
a connection outside the internal network from that server.
