I have recently set up an older computer with windows server 2003. i have
installed dns, iis 6, and promoted to domain controller. i can send and
receive emails to anyone on my local network. i can send emails to certain
external addresses but i cannot for others. i also cannot receive emails
from any outside addresses. i currently do not have a registered domain name
so i am assuming that is why i cannot receive any emails from external
address, but i have not been able to figure out why there are certain
external addresses i can send to but others i cannot. any help would be
greatly appreciated. i have my mail server sending mail itself and is not
using a smart host, i have tried configuring to use a smart host either have
received the same results or was unable to send mail at all. thank you in
advance for your time and effort.

You'll need to check your SMTP logs as well as NDR's, but first guess
is you have a dynamic IP and many systems are dropping your email as
potential spam. Second guess is that your ISP is blocking port 25 so
you can't send spam or be used as a relay. Third guess would be your
firewall or router config.

Hello,

The reason why you cannot send to some email addresses, is probably because
the receiving SMTP server has some kind of protection agains SPAM, and
classifies your SMTP server as a server sending out SPAM. This happens if
your email server is not properly configured as an email server (and in your
case, you at least do not have the domain name properly configured).

Sometimes, the logs can tell you why you cannot send to the remote SMTP
server. Please check the SMTP log files, and the Event Log.

Thank you for the input guys I appreciate the help. My ISP doesnt have port
25 blocked, I havent actually checked into it but there are a lot of
addresses that i can send mail to outside my domain so I am assuming that
eans that port 25 is open. I do have a dynamic IP so the thought on other
servers thinking I am a spam server would kind of make sense. I have gone
over all my router configurations and even though my actual network is on a
dynamic IP I have all the computers on my network setup with static IP
addresses and I have the DMZ Host setting enabled and pointed toward my
server's address. I tried reloading the whole thing from scratch and
reinstalled everything and began anew but I am back where i started. i can
send and receive mail throughout my domain perfectly....i can send email to
some addresses outside of my domain but there are some that i cannot. and of
course since i do not have a registered name yet i cannot receive any from
outside my domain. there could be some setting i am missing but im not quite
sure. perhaps when i finally register my domain my problems will be easier
to resolve. i thank you both for your time and effort.

Just to touch base and let everyone know.....i took your advice and began
searching through my smtp logs and found the reason why certain emails could
not be sent outside my domain. it appears the reason is because i have not
registered my domain name yet. for all the emails i attempted to send that
were not able to be delivered the error code stated something to the effect
that the sending domain did not exist. i guess as a spam guard or some other
sort of protection certain servers check DNS entries to validate where the
mail is coming from and if the domain isnt listed then they reject.....but
politely cause the error message said "no thank you, rejected. domain does
not exist"....lol....thank you all for your time and effort
