Unable to send mail to myself...

| Tom,
I had setup my companies SMTP relay server and was getting
the same error, what fixed it for me was to Check
the "Attempt direct delivery before sending to smart host"
check box in the SMTP Site Property. According to
Microsoft TD #230235 it says to do so if you are doing
your own DNS, which I am.

Thanks for the reply Bjarni. Unfortunately that wasn't the solution to my
problem.
I did solve the problem and because I have seen this question asked so
frequently (here and across the internet) that I figured I'd provide a
follow-up. The server in question was working perfectly for about 6 months
(this machine is never used interactively - it is just my smpt/pop3/ftp/web
server machine).
The only thing that could have changed was that I *had* "automatically
download and install updates" turned on, so one of the updates must have
hosed it.
First I re-installed the smpt/pop3 services - no luck. Then I re-installed
all of IIS - no luck. Finally I re-installed the entire OS from scratch and
then everything started working again.
Not a very fun (or practical) solution but what can you do?
