| Hi,
My exchange 2000 on win2K suddenly stopped sending out
emails. I use SMTP server. we can send internal msgs
within the company, can receive external msgs, however,
can't send external msgs.
restarting the service doesn't solve the prolem. setting
up a new SMTP vitual server doesn't help either. Queue is
not long, everything seems fine.
Help!!!

So, how do you *know* you can't send out emails?
Hint: If *you* know this then you need to provide *us* with the
information that causes you to know it. Error messages, non delivery
reports, event log entries, smtp log entries, etc.

| Am experiencing the same, or a very similar, problem. Like you, this problem ocurred suddenly. Like you, users can send mail internally. Like you, users can receive external mail. Users just cannot sent mail to an external address.
In my case, Outlook has Non-Delivery Reports similar to the following (I have edited the user names, server names and domain names for privacy reasons).

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.
Subject: Matsonic Test

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:
'myname@MyISP.ie' on 20/03/2004 17:02
There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server. Please contact your system administrator.
<MyServerName.MYDomain.ie #5.5.0 smtp;550-Verification failed for <Name@MyDomain>>
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The SMTP connector queue properties status reports 'An SMTP Protocol error ocurred' .
Am awaiting results from the event log (I provide support to the site concerned, but am not based there).
I note that SP4 (Windows 2000) includes a 'fix' for a kinda similar problem. If you are not running SP4, perhaps it would be worth while applying to see if this helps.

| Hey you guys,
This happened to me not too long ago. My ISP changed DNS server addresses.
I changed the network properties but I'd forgotten about a setting buried
deep within the Exchange 2000 server. For some reason, they give you the
ability to specify EXTERNAL DNS servers for the Exchange server to use. I
stupidly added the ISP's DNS server addresses and forgot about it.
These settings were still using the old DNS server addresses. I removed the
offending addresses and the mail started going through as expected. Here's
where I found this setting.
In System Manager -> Organization Name -> Servers -> Servername ->
Protocols -> SMTP -> Default SMTP Virtual Server Properties -> Delivery
tab -> Advanced button -> Configure... button.
If you see DNS server entries here, you may want to remove them (unless
you're actually using separate external DNS servers).
Does that help? I remembered these settings on my way home from a "night
out with the boys". Who said drinking's not good for you?
Don't drink and drive,
Rob
