When I do this and send an email from my pc using an email account hosted on
the server, I get the password prompt box which has the correct details but
it is not accepted.

Additionally
I've done some checks through DNS Report and I get

"could not complete a connection to any of your mailservers
mail.domain.com: Could not connect without glue or A record.
mail2.domain.com: Could not connect without glue or A record."

I've got 1 IP address and each zone has the appropriate records including an
A and MX

When I do ns lookup, this is what I get:

set type=all
domain1.com
Server: aDifferentDomain.com
Address: my IP Address

domain1.com internet address = the IP address
domain1.com nameserver = thenameofmyserver
domain1.com nameserver = domain1.com
domain1.com
primary name server = thenameofmyserver
responsible mail addr = hostmaster
serial = 12
refresh = 900
retry = 600
expire = 86400
default TTL = 3600
domain1.com MX preference = 10,mail exchanger = domain1.com
domain1.com internet address = my ip address
domain1.com internet address = my ip address

Q: why (under Server) does it thow up a different domain name?

Hmmm. It works on my test system, but the email client is on the same system
as the SMTP server. You may have to use Basic Authentication if for some
reason you can't get Integrated Authentication to work. Both Windows systems
? using OE or Outlook ?

That is the name of the name server (DNS) nslookup is using. By default it
uses the IP you (or DHCP) put for the name server IP in the TCP/IP settings
for your computer. If it has the same IP but has a different name from your
zone records, it could be the Full Computer Name as specified in the
Computer Name tag of the System Properties on your name server.

As far as the error, it doesn't reflect your zone record at all. You have no
mail.domain.com record or mail2.domain.com. Are you shortening the
translation of the names at all ? domain1.com instead of mail.domain.com ?
Is this a subzone ?

In addition, you only have one email server so I don't know why it's
reporting from two servers. It's complaining about the A record. The MX must
have an A (address) record as opposed to a CNAME. However, if it's
translated correctly, your MX points to an A record ?

I'm confused. If you want, email me your domain name and I'll check it from
here. It sometimes reports differently from inside then outside. email: mm
