IIS and SMTP - Strange Happenings

I'm running an vsmtp service on iis5 and am having a little issue with mail delivery.

I can send identical emails to an address, one works one bounces back with 550 relaying denied(not too important). From what I can see the service is resolving the mx to an internal host when the 550 occurs. whereas the other time the mx resolves correctly.

Has anyone ever seen this before and have an answer?
