Author smtp .bad mail files

We have an smtp server sit in front of our exchange 5.5
server which runs our spam catching software. The 2
servers communicate with each other, but on the front end
server when I look at the c:\Inetpub\mailroot\badmail
directory I see a lot of files. Some of the really large
files have a .bad extention. There are files with 2
other extention types as well but they are very small.
What I am asking is can any of the files in this
directory simply be deleted? Are they just bad formed
mail and I can get rid of them?

Thanks,

~ Lynda
