2003 server with SMTP virtual server

| How do i configure a 2003 server to receive email from our web hosting
company and then distribute the emails using the virtual SMTP server
to our local email clients. We do not have Exchange so that is out of
the question. My goal is to be able to download all of our email from
our hosting company to the 2003 server and then distribute the emails
to the clients. I would like this process so that we can perform a
backup of our emails and filter the emails for SPAM. Is this a
possible solution without MS Exchange

You would have to use an SMTP client, not a POP/MAPI client such as
Outlook. Fortunately, you have a POP3 server in Server 2003 as well,
and this can be configured that way.

It's possible with your ISP/Host handling the email, just at the
client level. There are no AV or SPAM solutions that I know of for
the POP/SMTP services in Server 2003, nor does it provide an effective
archiving or journaling option for backup, so you might as well do it
at the client end with your ISP as your mail host.

You could use Symantec's Enterprise package, it includes a bunch of decent
products, including one for Exchange, and also an SMTP gateway style AV/Spam
filter which will work with any SMTP connection..
