IIS and SMTP - SMTP traffic

Hello,

We have a web site with about 2000 subscribers. Once a week we send them an html email. It looks like all the emails get queued until the last one is sent and then they are all sent 'at once', blocking almost all other traffic through the 2 closest router
s.

Is this normal, are messages queued until the session is closed or something of the sort?
