When I have the IIS window open, the Default SMTP Virtual
Service shows (STOPPED). I attemtp to start it and it
responds with: The service did not respond to the start or
control request in a timely fashion. Check the Windows
Event Viewer for details.

There is no event in windows and the service remains
stopped. All CDONTS mail genereated simply remains in the
pickup folder and never moves to the queue for transmittal.

Any idea on how I can fix this? I've deinstalled IIS and
reinstalled with no change and have done the same with the
SMTP service. I'm really stuck.

You're sure there is no event in the Event Viewer?

I am having the same EXACT problem, and there is nothing
in the event log at all....not even around the same time
as the error occurs.
