SMTP mail queue

How long will mail be stored in the smtp mail queue? I
am running Windows 2000 Server and IIS 5 with a smtp
virtual server relaying to our exchange server. Also our
smtp mail queue seems to always have over 1000 messages
in it. Are these messages that just keep trying to be
delivered but can't?
