IIS and SMTP - SMTP Virtual Server Failing to Start

SMTP Virtual Server Failing to Start

I recently joined a company that has been having problems
with their virtual
SMTP server not starting. Emails sent via ASP files on
our website enter the
Pickup folder but fail to be sent to their destinations.
When I attempt to
start the virtual server I get the following error
message:

The service did not respond to the start or control
request in a timely
fashion
Check the Windows Event Viewer for details.

As I am quite new to IIS any help someone can provide
would be very welcome.
